The Love Your Local Market campaign, run by NABMA, was started in 2012 following recommendations made in the Portas Review. The recommendations called for a National Market Day, which soon developed into Love Your Local Market Fortnight, which now takes place annually in May.
From an initial take up of 400 markets, successive campaigns have developed into an international movement spanning 16 countries, with over 1100 markets participating in the UK alone in 2016. Since 2012 over 10,000 people have tried their hand at market trading and around 1500 new businesses have been created as a result. The main purpose of Love Your Local Market is to raise the profile of markets across the UK, encourage start-up businesses and increase young people’s involvement in markets. However, there are many more benefits from getting involved in the campaign which is why NABMA are encouraging as many markets to take part in 2017.
