MARKET BENCHMARKING

Just a reminder that the markets benchmarking meeting will be held in Manchester at the APSE offices starting at 10.30am on the 14th February. It is encouraging to note that, in addition to the members of the original pilot group, we have had interest from several other members. However, there is still room for more!

If your authority is already a member of APSE there is no further charge. If you are not a member it will cost you around £1200 for one year’s participation. The meeting on the 14th February is important because we will be finalising the KPIs for the coming year. If you are interested please contact Graham Wilson at wilsonconsultant@blueyonder.co.uk or on 07967276882.

MARKET RENTS AND VAT

A detailed information note was circulated yesterday on this important issue with advice on the arguments to use to prevent the addition of VAT to market rents. In order that NABMA can represent its members effectively it is important that any member facing facing the imposition of VAT informs NABMA of the threat so we can be aware of the situation across the country. We are advised that it is likely to take a Tribunal decision to decide this matter. NABMA can help to ensure the best case is presented. In the meantime, we will be raising the matter with the APPMG with the hope of securing a meeting with HMRC.

ASSOCIATION OF CONVENIENCE STORES – RURAL SHOPS REPORT

The ACS have just published their 2018 Rural Shops Report and while members might feel that the Report has little interest to market operators you would be wrong. The key to survival of rural shops is seen as adaption and embracing initiatives such as cashless payments. Rural shops have to find ways of engaging more effectively with their customers and offering additional services. All this sounds very similar to what markets should be doing if they are to survive.
