Welcome to Love Your Local Market
What is it?
Love Your Local Market is a fortnights celebration of our market scene and culture that takes place in May. In 2013 we witnessed 700 markets participate throughout the UK, giving thousands of new businesses a chance to test trade. Thousands more educational establishments, charities and social enterprises also participated, re-establishing markets at the heart of community life.
Nabma has coordinated the campaign since Mary Portas first put forward the notion of a Market Day and we are proud that the campaign, as the largest market event ever to have taken place in living memory, has won Nabma the recognition of delivering the most successful manifestation of the High Streets Review.
Why get involved?
Here at Nabma we want Market Operators to explore ‘What Good Looks Like” and that is the essence of Love Your Local Market. If your market is performing brilliantly, we want to hear from you and we want you involved. If your market could do with regenerating, we want to hear from you and we want you involved so that together we can collectively explore best practise and learn from one another.
And there are so many ways you can do this and many examples of what markets got up to on the LYLM website. However the key to success was expounded by Warrington Markets Mananger, Steve Pickering at this years Nabma Conference, when he said ‘get as many other people on the bandwagon as you can’. So whether you are a council officer working with colleagues to help them deliver outcomes around health and wellbeing, or a green transport initiative or whether you are a grassroots, social enterprise working alongside arts groups or your local college, Love Your Local Market is all about inviting these organisations into the public spaces of our towns and cities to get their message across to a wider audience and in the process creating a ‘Festival of Markets’.
What can we do now?
One of the strongest elements of the LYLM campaign is through social media, so make sure to link to one, or all of the love Your Local Market accounts on Twitter, Facebook or Pinterest with a LinkedIn presence launching shortly. Our team have been known to make 4 million impressions on Twitter in a week, so let them know what you’re up to and they will start spreading the word whatever the time of year, as the campaign is here to support Market Operators year round.
Heading towards the Winter months we are approaching a new initiative; Love Your Local Market Christmas, and we would love your markets to be involved in this. So head on over to the Love Your Local Market website today ….. and start getting involved!

Teenage Market supports 2014 goals
Brothers Joe and Tom Barrett from Stockport were recent Nabma guests at our Annual Conference, delivering a rousing presentation of their particular brand of market offer. With the 2014 campaign very much focussing around youth and having set a goal to inspire operators to deliver 100 markets primarily aimed at attracting young people, the Teenage Market may just be able to help.
In a similar way that Love Your Local Market is a ‘Festival of Market”, The Teenage Market turns a market into a festival, offering young people free pitches to come along and give their local market a try. The concept has proved enormously popular, with events now hosting around 80 stallholders and even spawning a pop up shop & TV channel.
Tom and Joe have now come up with a way to support market operators in delivering a Teenage Market in their area, so make sure to visit their website and find out all about it.
We have been talking to sponsors Chip and Pin who are putting together an exciting ‘Unlock the Pin’ Competition to celebrate the launch of Love Your Local Market Christmas, so make sure you connect with the campaign through social media to ensure you hear about it first.
