Market football competition winner unveiled

The lucky winner of Bolton Market’s World Cup flavours competition has been revealed.

More than a thousands entries were received and Ray Fielding, from Timperley in Cheshire, netted the prize package, provided by cash and carry membership warehouse club operator Costco Wholesale.

He won a 40in flat screen TV; Nintendo Wii; DVD player; digital radio; mini fridge, plus a fresh food hamper from Bolton Market.

The competition was part of a successful World Cup themed campaign held in Bolton Market, on Ashburner Street, throughout June.

Crowds enjoyed a variety of entertainment and a taste of all the nations competing in the World Cup.

Local chefs ran a series of football-themed cookery demonstrations in the indoor cookery kitchen. Visitors were shown how to use fresh produce from the market to rustle up quick and easy meals.

Streetwise Soccer Skills put on a display of football skills in the market and traders ran special offers coinciding with match fixtures.

Councillor Akhtar Zaman, Bolton Council’s Executive Member for Environmental Services, said: “The campaign has been great for the market and people have been saying the market looks even busier. We’re extremely grateful to Costco for working in partnership with us, which has helped make the campaign a real success.”

Bruce Greenaway, Costco Wholesale’s warehouse manager in Oldham, added: "We are pleased to be involved in this type of community event and that we were given a chance to talk about Costco to the market visitors."

Ray Fielding said: “I’ve not been to Bolton or the market in 20 years and was very impressed with the fantastic foods on offer as well as the general atmosphere and I will definitely be coming back.”
