A CAMPAIGN is being launched next week to attract new customers to Darlington’s markets.
With trading dating back to 1863, the markets have built up a reputation for value for money and first class service.

The markets have contributed to the diversity of the town, and in recent months have updated their image and service by letting stalls to local artists and designers.

Darlington Council also hopes to attract new traders to contribute to their already varied stalls, and help to further persuade additional customers to shop there.

The markets recently received an award from the National Market Traders’ Federation for being the most improved, and eco-friendly market in the country, fighting off competition from more than 1,000 other markets.

The campaign will run until the end of March with an advertising campaign to attract people to shop in Darlington town centre.

Leader of the council, John Williams, said: “Darlington's markets have always attracted many shoppers, however we need to build on this and encourage additional people to shop there.”
Allan Draper, honorary treasurer of the National Market Traders’ Federation and a well-known Darlington indoor market stallholder, said: “We fully support this campaign to encourage those who wouldn’t usually shop at markets, to give it a go.

“Markets have so much to offer, with a huge range of products, often not found in the typical high street stores. It is important that we communicate the benefits in order to attract new customers.”
There will also be a free prize draw for the chance to win a £50 shopping voucher. Shoppers spending more than £5 will also receive a free jute ‘bag for life’ until Friday, January 29.
