Leeds Kirkgate Market management changes

Wednesday 04 November 2009

Leeds City Council’s markets manager, Chris Sanderson, has announced today that later this month he is leaving the council to pursue other interests.

Senior councillors and officers have expressed their support and gratitude for his 12 years of service at the helm of one of Europe’s biggest, most diverse and historic indoor markets.  Chris is also responsible for other council-run markets at Pudsey, Yeadon and Otley.

Over the past few weeks, the council has begun discussions with the traders over how it can help improve business at the market and provide support for them during the recession.   The council is looking at a range of options and an announcement on this support will be made later this week after officers have met with a group of traders’ representatives.

Councillor Andrew Carter, deputy leader of Leeds City council and executive member responsible for markets, said:

“Leeds Kirkgate Market is a vital part of the city centre and Chris has worked extremely hard over the years to deliver a range of improvements. He has always shown dedication, professionalism and commitment to his job and we are sorry to see him go, but we wish him well in future plans.

“These are difficult economic times and we recognise that we need to do all we can to help the market and its diverse businesses not just weather the recession, but to thrive and grow.
“We know that the market is an important part of this city’s heritage as well as a vital and much-loved shopping destination and we will continue to work to support its success.”
