Wembley Market trader jailed

Tuesday 19 May 2009

A TRADER was jailed for running a counterfeit goods business which brought in £600,000 in two years last week.

Manmon Chopra was handed a 12 month prison sentence by Huntingdon Crown Court on Monday, for selling sold knock-off Ecko, G-Unit, Nike, D&G, Armani and Prada clothes and trainers at stalls in Wembley Market.

Rajinder Chopra and Viki Singh Goulwara, of Hayes, were given 200 hours community service for their role in the business, after Trading Standards found £400,000 worth of goods in stashed in self storage.

Bill Bilon, director of Brent and Harrow Trading Standards, said: “This is a great example of my officers taking out another gang who thought it was safe to trade in counterfeit goods.

“During this difficult time of recession, people are attracted to cheap counterfeit goods but they should be aware of the huge detriment to local high street businesses who are trying to earn an honest living and of the impact counterfeiting has on legitimate companies whose products are being copied.

“Not to mention the loss to our economy through tax revenue.”
