In our Coventry Home Coventry Market
Tuesday 26 May 2009
Coventry Market traders have turned record producers to raise money for the Parkinson Disease Society.
The in our Coventry home Cd which has nearly sold out of its first pressing was created as part of the 2-tone at 30 series of events which has been celebrating 30 years of 2 tone SKA music made famous by Coventry bands such as the Specials and the Selecter.
Coventry Market has already sponsored a history of 2–Tone book, launch and after show 2-tone reunion party as well as a 2–Tone fashion show which drew fans from all over the country to the market to meet members of the bands and see Tonic clothing modelled on a catwalk in the market.
The market and traders have also been sponsoring 2-tone plaques which trace the history of ska music through Coventry on a 2 –tone trail, the latest one was sponsored by shoekings footwear stall in the market, unveiled by members of the Selecter and buster blood vessel from bad manners the plaque hangs near the site of the former horizon recording studios.
The cd which has been very well received by fans was played before the Specials came on to the stage at the Ricoh arena at their homecoming concert which ends a stint of sell out dates around the country.
The cd in our Coventry home features the verse
"We shop in a market
That’s round and not square
Were suited and booted
We buy it all there
In our Coventry home"
Recorded by a local Coventry band the Allskas the band features Irena Bosworth from the Markets computer stall on guitar and the CD cover was shot in the market with Steve 'cardboard' Eaton making a personal appearance. Steve was the Rude Boy photographed on the cover of the first selecter album and now has a retro / 2-Tone clothing stall in the market.
Brian sexton market manager for Coventry said, well we've done a documentary, a video, a musical, a DVD and we are just about to open a market cinema, so a music cd completes the picture, customers and traders have had some real fun with 2-tone events and music in the market this year and we still have a 2-tone exhibition on display in the market until October that’s been really popular and brought a lot of people into the market.
He went on to say "it's nice to be in the entertainment business, markets are a great fun and exciting place to be and it's nice to entertain the shoppers whilst they are here".
A clip from the cd is available to listen to on www.market.org.uk and details of how to obtain your own copy are also there.
