New Bromsgrove Market a Success
Thursday 12 March 2009
Residents defied the current recession by flocking to Bromsgrove’s brand new town market which has launched in the High Street.
The early signs look promising for the new venture as traders were kept busy all day by shoppers, during the first day of trading last Saturday, (March 8).
“It's been a very good start and it's great to see so many of our old customers turning up today."
Sid of Sid’s Men and Boys Clothing
Familiar faces who have run stalls at the old Market Hall, which closed at the end of February, made their first foray in the High Street setting up under the new marquees.
Sid’s Men and Boys Clothing, who had been trading in Bromsgrove Market for over 20 years and across two generations, made its first appearance in the High Street.
Sid said: “It's been a very good start and it's great to see so many of our old customers turning up today."
Judy Slavin, of the Sweet Shop, said of the first day she had been "rushed off my feet."
They were joined by new faces including Spuddy Marvellous, selling hot potatoes, and Sweet Delite, offering doughnuts.
Peter Michael, the district council’s economic development manager said it wasn’t just market traders who benefited from the “packed” market, as he was approached by staff from the Lemon Tree cafe and Greggs who claimed their businesses had been boosted by passing shoppers.
Restoring an 800-year-old tradition of markets in the town, Bromsgrove District Council has launched the market as part of on-going plans to regenerate the town centre.
The market will be held in Bromsgrove High Street three days a week, every Tuesday, Friday and Saturday.
