Handlers' food safety skills rewarde

Tuesday 20 January 2009

TWO dozen food handlers at Plymouth City Market have been given awards for their safety skills in catering.

The 24 market workers received their Level 2 Food Safety in Catering certificates from Plymouth City Council leader Vivien Pengelly at Ronnie's Café last week.

The Chartered Institute of Environmental Health qualification covers the 'four c' principles of good food hygiene – contamination, cooking, chilling and cleaning.

Course leader Dan Preece, a senior environmental health officer with the city council, said: "This course is ideal for anyone who handles food at work.

"It's good for business because it boosts customer confidence. Basically it's about treating food right so it gives people pleasure rather than pain!"

Cllr Pengelly said: "I'm an avid supporter of the market because it offers a traditional shopping experience which is totally unique in the city."

Markets and street trading manager Sally Perdrisat, who was among the successful course participants, added: "The reason for this initiative is to demonstrate everyone's commitment in the market to producing high-quality food.

"We are keen to encourage the local produce – and to show that all our produce is safe.
"It is vital for customers to know our food is properly cooked and up to standard."
