Government support on Unlawful Street Trading

Tuesday 11 March 2008

Brian Iddon MP, has secured important government support in his fight to introduce national legislation to combat unlawful street trading. Following the presentation of six local Bills the government is becoming concerned at the amount of parliamentary time likely to be taken up by the Bills and also the prospect that others will follow in the future. The government’s view has also been influenced by a survey undertaken by the Local Government Association, undertaken following pressure from Nabma and Dr Iddon, which reveals that the vast majority of local authorities surveyed want to see national legislation.

John Hutton, Secretary of State, for Business Enterprise and Regulatory Reform has now indicated that “there is a case for further work in this area and … my officials have established an approach to address the lack of evidence for national legislation". The Secretary of State indicates that this research will “take some months to complete” and against this background local authorities might be persuaded to postpone plans for introducing further private Bills”. Nabma will be working with Dr.Iddon to obtain details of the work that is to be undertaken and to ensure that the progress we have made will continue.
