Markets Champion Praises Nabma
Thursday 17 July 2008
“At the recent All Party Parliamentary Group for Markets, Councillor Dave Goddard, the Leader of Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council and “Champion for Markets” at the Local Government Association, praised NABMA in terms of being a quality lobbying organisation at the forefront of profiling the market sector.
Councillor Goddard spoke at length about the value of markets in Stockport and his belief that with social trends changing through economic influences, people are now starting to move back towards supporting their local market. He considered markets to be meeting places and considered that it was important that every town or city should have vibrant market squares, with markets acting as a social key.
Councillor Goddard assured NABMA and the All Party Group that he would continue to lobby on our behalf as markets is a subject that he is passionate about. He stressed his belief about the value of markets for social interaction and his commitment to continue representing and championing a cause that he firmly believes in.
The Chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Group for Markets, Ann Coffey, M.P. for Stockport also expressed the view that markets are a party of town centre regeneration and must be recognised within the revisions to PPS6.
Ann Coffey stressed that each town and city centre has different challenges but markets but remain as part of town centre regeneration and must be central to the regeneration agenda and not just an add on.
Councillor Paul Westley, Chairman of the NABMA Retail Forum pictured with Councillor Dave Goddard above endorsed and welcomed the views of the Markets Champion for the LGA and Ann Coffey, M.P. “Markets now have an exciting agenda and it is encouraging for NABMA to hear such leading politicians highlighting their importance and the requirement for them to be firmly placed in both national and local strategies.”
NABMA Chief Executive Graham Wilson acknowledged that “ NABMA looks forward to working with the All Party Parliamentary Group in the future and playing its part within the positive consultations and debates now taking place.”
