Market has 10,000 visitors in first week

Tuesday 15 July 2008

Wakefield’s new £3 million market hall, was officially opened on Saturday (July 5), received more than 10,000 visitors in its first week, a delighted senior councillor has revealed.

Cllr Denise Jeffery, Deputy Leader of Wakefield Council and Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Culture and Sport, said she was very pleased with the number of people who had visited the new market since it opened for business on Monday June 23.

“We have worked hard to ensure that this exciting new venture offers shoppers what they want. We aim to continue to please our existing customers but we are also working hard to attract new customers who may never have shopped in markets before.”

Cllr Jeffery officially opened the new market hall at 11.15am on Saturday 5th July. It is the first of several regeneration projects in Wakefield city centre to be completed.

She said: “There is an emphasis on high quality, local produce which has proved popular. The new market hall is a stunning building designed by top architect David Adjaye and is in a prime location in the city centre. I am sure that we will build on this early success and that it will become a popular shopping destination in its own right.”

The market hall houses 49 general indoor units, 11 retail areas in the food hall, nine shops fronting onto Union Street and 45 outdoor stalls in the adjoining open market.

The open market and the new market hall are part of the Trinity Walk development by Modus Properties and Simons Developments, with the main contractor for the scheme being Shepherd Construction Ltd. It is set transform the Marshway area of the city and in addition to the new market hall, includes more than 500,000 sq ft of retail accommodation including new stores for Debenhams, Sainsbury, Next, H&M, Peacocks and New Look, 72 residential units, a 957 customer space car park and a new library.

Some of the units on the open market are still available on selected days. Interested traders should contact Market Services on 01924 307826.
