Exciting times at Stockport
Monday 28 July 2008
The All Party Parliamentary Group for Markets at their recent meeting in the House of Commons received a presentation from Nicola Turner, Project Director, Town Centre Regeneration, Stockport MDC.
Nicola spoke at length about the significant changes in Stockport, particularly in terms of the physical fabric of the market area, outlining the exciting initiatives that have moved the markets from a position of decline to having a new exciting future.
Nicola spoke about an agenda of partnership and commitment, a development that has been undertaken with a “whole council” approach to markets and senior Councillor support. An exciting presentation provided an outline of trader initiative schemes; new initiatives being promoted; an outline of investment in facilities; a programme of events that has been compiled; results of market surveys and the outcomes from complimentary markets that have been provided.
Nicola also explained how the investment in Stockport markets had fitted into a wider regeneration programme that not only compliments high street shopping but also enhances the markets as one of the town centre historic attractions. Nicola also spoke about the challenges and opportunities facing Stockport markets, particularly in terms of an aging customer profile; the availability of cheaper alternatives and the segregation of the market in terms of its location away from the town centre. Against these challenges were opportunities such as shopping being firmly a leisure activity, the increase in specialist markets and the major development plans in terms of the centre itself.
It was agreed that the presentation was extremely exciting and NABMA hopes that Nicola will be able to speak at a future NABMA event to explain in greater detail the experiences and lessons learnt to date.
