London Assembly review of markets in London

Tuesday 17 July 2007

The London Assembly’s Economic Development, Culture, Sport and Tourism Committee is carrying out a review of markets across the capital and wants to hear your views.

Our review is concentrating on street markets, covered markets, farmers’ markets and specialist markets (both local authority and privately operated). We aim to identify:

  • the current number of markets in London and changes in the numbers and types of markets over the last ten years; and

  • what is being done, or could be done, to maximise the positive impact of markets and address any problems.

  • We would like to receive any written views and information that you may have with regard to markets in London. For example, you may want to comment on changes to markets in London, the problems they face such as increased competition from supermarkets and what is being done to help markets. Or you may want to tell us about markets that are doing well and suggest how others can be improved.

Please provide written responses by Monday 3 September 2007 to Laura Warren, Scrutiny Team, GLA, City Hall, The Queen’s Walk, London SE1 2AA or e-mail: laura.warren@london.gov.uk. If you have any questions, please contact Laura on 020 7983 4507.

We are keen to hear from a wide range of organisations and individuals as part of our review. If your organisation represents other groups and/or you know of others who may want to give us their views, please share this request with them or contact Laura to discuss.

The views and information you provide will inform our public meeting on 16 October 2007 and our final report on markets, which we expect to publish early next year. We intend to hold our public meeting near a market so we can hear directly from market traders and customers. We also intend to conduct site visits to other markets in September. If you would like any further information about our review, please visit our web site: http://www.london.gov.uk/assembly/scrutiny/econ_cst-markets.jsp or contact Laura.

Please note that we may publish all written submissions we receive on our website, unless they are marked as confidential, or there is a legal reason for non-publication. However, under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 we may be required to send out a copy of the written response if a member of the public or the media request it, even if it has been marked as confidential.

We look forward to receiving your response.

    Yours sincerely,

    Dee Doocey AM
    Chair of the Committee
