Shrewsbury Indoor Market Visit
Wednesday 18 April 2007
NABMA delegates are pictured in the Shrewsbury Indoor Market with Shrewsbury Markets Manager Jean Wigley on their recent visit to the county town of Shropshire. Part of the day included a visit to the indoor market that has recently returned to the management of the Council following a three year contract that was delivered by an external operator.
The four day a week market has the difficulty of being accommodated at first floor level with the pannier stalls being managed by the Council but balcony shops being administered by a property company. Despite the location the market continues to attract a well subscribed trader list and the range and quality of stalls is admirable.
A particular concern to the markets management is the cleaning of the market canopies constructed above the pannier stalls. Markets Manager Jean Wigley would appreciate any thoughts or assistance on methods of cleaning and successes achieved elsewhere.
NABMA President Councillor Don Davies praised the indoor market. “The atmosphere, commitment of markets management and the trader mix presents Shrewsbury with a market facility that it can be proud of. Whilst many indoor markets do struggle Shrewsbury are clearly committed to succeed and their experiments with management, shared operation and investment in market infrastructure were topics of great interest to our membership.”
