Nabma takes action to deal with Pedlars and Unlawful Street Trading

Monday 24 July 2006

NABMA members will be aware of the efforts that have been made in recent years to persuade the Government to repeal the pedlars’ legislation and take action to review the street trading provision. Unfortunately, despite having support from a number of prominent organisations, the Government has yet to be persuaded that changes are necessary. However Newcastle enacted local legislation to deal with the problems of pedlars and unlawful street trading in Newcastle City Centre and this appears to have been successful. Currently two of our members, Leicester and Liverpool, are also pursing local legislation along the lines of the Newcastle provisions and it has been suggested that NABMA might like to co-ordinate the interest of other NABMA members who also might like to consider pursuing local legislation. With this in mind a note has been circulated to all member authorities of NABMA. Anyone who has an interest in at least considering the possibility of local legislation is invited to a meeting which is likely to be held in Birmingham just prior to NABMA’s AGM and Conference. All that is required at this time is an indication of interest and attendance at the meeting is no more than to establish whether this is a proposal that can be taken further. Please let me know of your interest as soon as possible and the intention will be to circulate to all interested parties towards the end of August with a view to a meeting early in September.
